Although YouTube may be used mainly for enjoyment purposes, there are also many ways in which it can be used for educational purposes, and with using YouTube for educational purposes comes its advantages and disadvantages.
Most of the videos available on YouTube are easy to locate as they don't require many keywords, and they also give you suggestions on what you might be searching for. The website has occasional server problems, meaning that the website is generally always up and running. It is also the most popular video sharing website, so the content on the website is diverse. For student use, students are able to locate videos with a variety of perspectives, which can come in handy when completing assignments. It is also a handy website for teachers to use, as they are able to upload videos that they may want their students to watch for homework.
Although these points seem rather significant, and it may look as though there is nothing wrong with the website, YouTube does have it's disadvantages. Even though there are a variety of perspectives, for research purposes it may be difficult to locate a video that demonstrates an appropriate response for the topic. It is also quite distracting, as students can look up any type of video, that may not be relevant to school. Using YouTube can also be a problem when the internet connection/speed isn't that fast, meaning it will take a very long time for any of your videos to load, which can lead to students wasting time on other websites. Videos may also take a while to load if there are too many people online at the one time in the same place, if stuednts are accessing the website at school.
